The Phantom of the Opera, SoundtrackAmazon.com
For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg’s Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher’s film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed… More >>

What kind of person enjoys this inane caterwalling? The sets were beautiful but the lyrics nearly indecipherable and the music laughable. If you listen to this thing for 5 minutes you’ve heard it all. The only part of the music that was enjoyable was so unintentionally. I swear to God, about 45 minutes into the film ALW does about 8 bars of a song some of you may remember from the old Doctor Demento show called “Fishheads.” It went “Fishheads, fishheads, rolly polly fishheads, fishheads, fishheads, eat them up yum!” What ever happened to musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver, or Fiddler On The Roof?

Oh, why can’t I give this zero stars? I have been a devoted fan of Phantom forever- I have heard over thirty different casts (that’s right- thirty)in several different languages. THIS IS THE WORST SINGING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. Gerard Butler is an absolute insult to the role (come on, the man is a smoker- smokers can’t sing…duh), and even I can sing better than Emmy Rossum. I cried after hearing this- the movie brought about a new group of “fans” who can’t distinguish quality singing from absolute slop like this and don’t even know a thing about the deeper story. You want a quality production of this musical? GO TO BROADWAY- HINT, NONE OF THE SINGERS IN THIS RECORDING EVER PERFORMED THERE! The finest Phantom I have ever heard is Hugh Panaro (who just recently left to star in Lestat), but the current Broadway Phantom, Howard McGillan, is brilliant as well (he has also performed the role more than any other actor on Broadway). STAY AWAY FROM THIS RECORDING- FOR YOUR OWN SAKE AND THE SAKE OF THE LONGTIME PHANS.

Emmy can’t sing!!!!!!!!!!!! Sarah Brightman still looks like she is 20 yrs. old, why not cast her instead? Emmy scoops her high notes and everything else just is immature!!

This soundtrack’s ok, i mean…. the phantom of the opera…. the name, HELLO??? the word O-P-E-R-A… it didn’t sound like one to me. The music is too movie-like. the singing is a little weak, especially from Christine’s part.
The movie, too, is like, ok i’m done with all the singing, can we start talking now? whew!
Oh yeah, i don’t really like the Phantom of the Opera song on the souundtrack… it’s really 80’s with the blaring guitar and drum beat. IT’S AN OPERA HERE PEOPLE! I say, just go and see the real thing with the REAL singer… Sarah Brightman.
I DO like it though (that’s why there’s 3 stars) because i like the music and some of it’s pretty good.
NOTE: i am actually over 13, but i just didn’t feel like getting out the credit card.

I bought this CD because I wanted to compare it to the original broadway soundtrack. What a waste of money! [...] in my opinion, these folks cannot sing. Maybe I feel this way because I’m such a huge fan of the original with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Emmy Rossum’s voice is so weak. Comparing her to Sarah Brightman is like comparing Whitney Houston to Britney Spears! It’s weak and not even pretty to me. She struggles with the soaring notes and even great musical accompianment does not help her. The phantom is disappointing as well. The phantom’s voice should be seductive and soothing. When Michael Crawford sings “The Music of the Night”, it can almost put you in a dreamlike state. This guy who sings the phantom role in the movie couldn’t seduce anybody!!! I couldn’t find one song on this CD that didn’t annoy me. [...] Don’t waste your money. Buy the original broadway version with REAL talent.
